Peer Review For Ryan Wolfe

It's the last blog post of the semester, and I'm not even going to be talking about my own work!

For this review, I'll be looking at Ryan Wolfe's "A Reflection" for one of his essay's body sections. My comments for him can be found here.

An explanation of the peer review activity you selected for the project you reviewed

I'll be talking about Ryan's rough draft for his final project in the form of a video essay, and I provided some suggestions on the form he employed.

An explanation of how you think you helped the author with your feedback

Ryan has an excellent rough draft of his reflection, but I feel like the voiceover was a major lackluster part of the piece, and re-recording it would do the video a great service. Also, by integrating the video cuts better the video will have a more cohesive flow.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

When looking at the video essays posted for us to view and my own from project 3, I found that integrating video clips well and having a good voiceover were both super important to a video essay.

It was interesting to see how he broke down the reflection into projects rather than into different personal sections like I did.

Rough Cut

After sitting down in class and learning that the rhetorical situation of a piece is of paramount importance, I realized that a new approach to my research was going to be needed. This revelation was further stressed by the research reports we completed as process work leading up to the creation of our rough and final drafts for each project. In the blog post entitled “My Sources” I was researching not only to find sources, but to find information about the sources themselves as evidenced by me delving into the author’s own background such as when I discussed an article “written by Peter Fairley, a freelance writer who writes almost exclusively on energy around the world, he writes for IEEE Spectrum, Nature, and MIT Technology Review” (Allred, “My Sources” 1). I even came to discuss the author’s potential bias while writing, noting that “he may be slightly biased on the subject as he argues for renewable energy in various nations across the globe such as France, Canada, and the United States” which is something that previously I would have never considered (Allred, “My Sources” 1). At the time I was certainly unhappy with all of that seemingly useless work that I was being asked to do, but now I have come to see that by looking at all aspects of a piece before using it in my own work I have a deeper understanding of what the author was really trying to convey with their writing. After sitting through the first days of lecture and learning that that something as basic as the rhetorical situation of a piece is of paramount importance, I realized that a new approach to my research was going to be needed. It’s easy to see me delving into these details like the author’s own background when I discussed an article “written by Peter Fairley, a freelance writer who writes almost exclusively on energy around the world, he writes for IEEE Spectrum, Nature, and MIT Technology Review” (Allred, “My Sources” 1). I even came to discuss the author’s potential bias while writing, noting that “he may be slightly biased on the subject as he argues for renewable energy in various nations across the globe such as France, Canada, and the United States” which is something that previously I would have never considered to be of any major importance unless a distortion of the facts was clearly evident (Allred, “My Sources” 1). At the time I was certainly unhappy with all of that seemingly useless work that I was being asked to do, but now I have come to see that by looking at all aspects of a piece before using it in my own work I have a deeper understanding of what the author was really trying to convey with their writing. When I’ve finished conducting my initial bouts of researching, it’s finally going to be time to begin putting words down on the page, the toughest part of writing.

Well, there's now no more "SOME TRANSITION" which I don't think was a great way for me to leave the reader going into the next paragraph since it doesn't tell them anything.

Once again the form didn't really change since for the most part I was just copy editing my piece, but it's still important to note that by adding a transition sentence I more closely follow the guidelines of an essay.

Terry Hayes once wrote that "the world doesn't change in front of your eyes, it changes behind your back," a sentiment that I find rather comforting as I look back on the experiences that I have had and shared this semester. I walked into an English class in January knowing little of what to expect besides what I had experienced in classes prior. As time passed I found that the class I was expecting was vastly different from the one that I received, but I was able to adapt to the challenges and see that my understanding of English was growing each day. Now I see a future where I will not only be expected to write, but to provide insight into the situation at hand. Despite this knowledge that I have now, I did not always see this class as a way to strengthen my understanding but time makes that detail clear. Yet as I made my way through the course I was forced to struggle with conducting research like I never had before, understanding how I needed to manage my limited time, and even taking care of myself in order to become a proficient writer.

As time passed I found that the class I was expecting was vastly different from the one that I received, but I was able to adapt to the challenges and see that my understanding of English was growing each day. Despite the knowledge that I now retain, I did not always see this class as a way to strengthen my skills, but time has made that detail clear. Now I see a future where I will not only be expected to write, but to provide insight into the situation at hand using a variety of different strategies, whether it be delving into the rhetorical situation or simply working in a new genre. Yet as I made my way through the course I was forced to struggle with conducting research like I never had before, understanding how I needed to manage my limited time, and even taking care of myself in order to become a proficient writer.

How did the content change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the content is being communicated more effectively in the re-edited version?

I was mostly making copy edits in this section, but one examples of a change was moving the sentence "despite this knowledge" forward in the paragraph. I believe the paragraph now flows a bit better and has a more logical progression.

I didn't really change the form in this section since I was only making small edits rather than drastic changes.

Open Post To Peer Reviewers

It's really the end, isn't it? So how do I feel about my work this semester?


Key information about your particular project that you would like anyone who peer reviews your draft to know

I think that my rough draft is actually going to be very close to what my final draft is since I've spent a lot of time writing it so far, and hope that most of the edits that I make will be smaller changes rather than complete rewrites.

Major issues or weaknesses in the “Rough Cut” that you’re already aware of (as well as anything you’d like to know from your editors about those weaknesses)

I'd definitely like to revise some of the language that I used in the piece and make some copy edits along with looking over the verb tenses I used, since I feel like it varied a lot more than it should have.

Major virtues or strengths in the “Rough Cut” that you’re already aware of (as well as anything you’d like to know from your editors about those strengths)

I feel like this gives a good insight into how I felt while working on these projects this semester, and also does a good job of explaining how I've become a better writer through this class.

Peer Review For Diego Alcantara

We're so close to end, so let's all finish strong!

For this review, I'll be looking at Diego Alcantara's production report 14b for one of his essay's body sections. My comments for him can be found here.

So I'm going to be reviewing Diego's essay fragment and making some suggestions about the content which he can add to this section to improve it.

An explanation of how you think you helped the author with your feedback

I think that Diego has a really good start with this section of his piece, but it could be improved by adding in more concrete examples of how his research has improved since he started, including research reports and the interviews we conducted.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

When looking at the other essays it is clear that there is often a lot of evidence presented to the reader, which Diego is lacking right now, so I suggested he add some so that he can improve his piece.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

I like how he compares his writing experience before this class to what he's doing now and shows how he's "evolved" to where he is now.

Oh man, how are we this close to being done?

Rough Closing:
A few days ago, I left Ina Gittings Room 203 for the last time this semester and with that I have almost ended my time in English this semester. While it hasn't always been fun and I certainly haven't had an easy time with it, I feel like I'm leaving a more insightful writer, ready to tackle the challenges which will certainly face me in the future. Whether it be technical reports, presentations, or any other genre which I have not yet written in, I know that the skills I have learned this semester will make me proficient in whatever I need to tackle. Despite all of the hardships we endured to get here, I'm thankful that I've gained a new set of skills.

How did you decide to use form to present your content in the raw material you’ve shared here? How did the conventions of your chosen genre influence your choices?

I tried to make sure that I wrapped up my thoughts and did it in a way that was consistent with an essay format by starting with a narrow focus and ending on a broad point.

How did the production of this raw material go? What kinds of any hiccups, challenges, successes, creative epiphanies, etc. occurred during the process?

It took me a while to write this since I was fairly distracted by other things, but after focusing again it went fairly well.

Writing an essay is vastly different from a podcast and even a QRG since it often has a much more formal tone along with having less of a focus on easy to read snippets but rather on the information being presented and how it is presented.

How did the production of this raw material go? What kinds of any hiccups, challenges, successes, creative epiphanies, etc. occurred during the process?

It was kind of difficult to figure out how I wanted to start the piece since I'm not entirely sure of all of the points that I'll be making yet, but after a while I figured out where I wanted to go.

It's time to reflect on all the work I've done so far, but what am I going to talk about?


Opening:
Talk about how it's been a rough semester for many reasons, but now that it's almost over, it's time to reflect on the work that I've done. Provide a brief overview of the topics I'll be discussing.


Body Sections:
  • Conducting such thorough research is something that was uncommon for my previous writing, but will now become an integral part of the process.
- First real project which required in depth research was for AP United States History, where I presented in detail on Rockefeller along with crafting a nine page essay on the topic where research was a primary focus.
- Looking through academic journal pieces such as this show that research is going to be very important for the papers I hope to publish eventually.


  • Throughout my writing career, time management has never been a strong suit of mine, and I often complete the majority of my work on the very last day
- Talk about how the trend started in my high school career where it really didn't matter when I started. Writing it the night before -> still an A grade.
- Unfortunately, this trend continued this semester with my work in this class, as evidenced by the majority of my blog posts and submissions coming on the Sunday they were due.


  • Yet another factor which may have negatively influenced my writing abilities is the unfortunate lack of personal care for myself
- Sleep schedule is a complete mess because of my work schedule which ruins my weekday sleep habits.
- Eating healthy is not a strong suit, as evidenced by my frequent trips to the union which I really need to cut out.

Reflection on Local Revision Process

That's all folks! So, what did I think?

What were some of the successes (or, things that went right) during this week’s process work? Explain, with evidence.

I definitely feel confident in the piece that I've created and I hope that those watching it. I cleaned up the voiceover and improved upon some of the graphics I presented which I hope improve the overall quality of the project.

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? Explain, with evidence.

Finding enough video and picture content to fill my 9 minutes of video was difficult, especially since some of the places I'm talking about are not well publicized such as specific mosques and Yemeni prisons.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

Since this was the last project before reflections, I'm ready to see how my work has changed over the semester.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

I feel good! I'm pretty proud of what I've made for my final cut, and hope it's informative to everyone who watches it.

I gave more of a broad statement at the end instead of just trying to cram it in at the very end of my rough draft like I did before, so that my opinion would be more clear and so that I could imply there is still a debate to be had on the issue.

How did the form change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the form is presenting the content more effectively in the re-edited version?

I changed the closing to seem more like a real closing by summing up my argument rather than just a simple ending sentence like I had before.

Alright, it's pretty much all over for this project, so what did I end up changing?


How did the content change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the content is being communicated more effectively in the re-edited version?

I talked a bit more about my personal argument in the project, since I feel like in the rough draft of the introduction I really didn't talk about it at all. Also, I rerecorded the voiceover since that was a complaint last time.

How did the form change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the form is presenting the content more effectively in the re-edited version?

I added a title screen to give the viewers more of a brief introduction rather than just starting with a video, which I think will help give an idea of what exactly I'll be talking about rather than just guessing.

I think it's important to say that working on a video was definitely the hardest of the three projects so far, but I hope that I've presented all of my information well.

Major issues or weaknesses in the “Fine Cut” that you’re already aware of (as well as anything you’d like to know from your editors about those weaknesses)

There's a few places where I wanted to have video rather than just pictures, but in many places it's just hard to find that kind of footage.

I really like the way that I've laid out all of my information, and think that by presenting the facts of the case, I was able to make a compelling argument in favor of Awlaki's death.

So I'm going to be reviewing Alec's QRG and making some copy editing suggestions in order to help him improve his piece before we publish tomorrow.

An explanation of how you think you helped the author with your feedback

I think that Alec has a decent rough draft, but don't think it has all of the necessary items to make it a true QRG. Without changing the graphics and possibly changing the voice of the QRG, it may not be seen as very effective.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

I used my knowledge from my own work on my QRG along with the genre examples on D2L from student examples and in the news.

I think that Alec is trying to tackle an important issue, and I hope that my own work is going to seem that way as well.

I think that this is a very close example of what a video essay should be, but it needs to have a few minor edits to make it perfect, which I hope that I can help with.

As I'm working on my own video essay, I thought that having quicker edits and less empty space will help greatly as shown in the genre examples of other student and professional work.

I like the way that Gabby brings in multiple different points to help make her argument, and think that I could improve my own argument by adding more concrete evidence.

Peer Review For Jack Auslen

I'll be reviewing Jack's rough draft of his college essay, and I'll be talking about a little about the form that needs to be used in a college essay.

An explanation of how you think you helped the author with your feedback

While I think he has a good start, there is still a lot of work to do to make it a true essay. Without citations, it is hard for the author to gain credibility with their readers. Also, I think it would benefit Jack to make it less story like and more factual.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

When reading the essays posted on D2L, it was very evident that in text citations are a must for a college essay, but Jack did not have any at this time.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

I think Jack is trying to take on a very interesting and very important topic, and it's interesting to see his take on something that hasn't quite unfolded all the way yet.

Peer Review For PJ Noghrehchi

It's once again time for peer reviews folks!

So, now that I've gotten some of my own work done, let's take a look at PJ Noghrehchi's essay entitled "Serenading at the University of Arizona: A Promotion of Rape Culture or A 21st Century Expression of Entertainment for All?" You can find my comments here.

I'll be reviewing PJ's rough draft of his college essay, where I'll be making a couple of suggestions about the form that he uses while writing.

An explanation of how you think you helped the author with your feedback

I think that PJ has a strong start but can use a bit more refinement and maybe even a bit more formal tone when writing to help more accurately portray his points.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

After looking at the genre examples on D2L, it was apparent that there was often 2-3 sentences of explanation for each quote, but that was not always the case in PJ's work.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

They added a very personal touch to their story which I thought was very interesting, and helped make the story seem more real.

After the first video segment, the introduction changed because I made the goal of the video more clear by telling viewers that it's time to find the cause, rather than introducing only the general topic.

How did the form change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the form is presenting the content more effectively in the re-edited version?

I edited the video to show a secondary clip of Alwaki rather than having a static image because I believed it would be far more interesting to the viewer than just a regular picture.

How did the content change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the content is being communicated more effectively in the re-edited version?
I think that by establishing a call to action to the viewer that it makes it a more effective ending since I'm asking to the reader to do something they may not have thought about before watching.

How did the form change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the form is presenting the content more effectively in the re-edited version?

By adding some different graphics and better narration, I believe that the viewer will be more engaged when the call to action comes than they were before.

I think that by publishing my rough draft I've made really good progress so far, and I think that I'll actually end up keeping most of it which isn't always the case.

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? Explain, with evidence.

Finding video segments to go along with my talking points is sometimes very difficult, especially when talking about the background of Awlaki such as where he used to be an imam.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

I think that I've got a solid base to work off of and edit next week, so I'll be looking forward to it.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

I'm actually feeling pretty good since I have a solid rough draft and some ideas on how I can make it better as well.

It was hard to introduce this topic without any bias due to its very complicated political nature and the ways in which  people already have their opinions, so please let me know if you feel that I'm biased.

I know that the graphical cuts may be a bit crude, especially at the end, but I'm working on finding some better ones as well as more videos rather than pictures.

I think that I do a pretty good job of showing the viewer how Awlaki's actions over the course of the past decade have caused this controversy, and hope that it shows in what I've produced so far.

I think that by providing a couple of content and copy editing suggestions, it will help to make the piece stronger overall and more clearly define the piece.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

When looking at the genre examples for standard college essays, the introduction paragraphs are usually very specific, and focus on one very specific topic rather than something broader.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

I like the way that they produced their own quote to work from, and showed how that thinking could be adapted to fit their argument.

Peer Review for Fernando Coronado

Alright, it's time to get down to business and start seeing how we want to make changes. In this post, I'll be talking about Fernando Coronado's "Production Report 11a."

I'll be reviewing Fernando's first production report, which in this case is a rough draft of his podcast introduction which provides background information about the topic and author. My comments can be found here.

As someone who's done a podcast, I found a few things missing from the introduction that I think would make it much stronger, and also hope that he changes some of his wording to seem like a more credible source.

After reviewing many podcasts for my own in project 2, there was always lots of sound effects and music, and also the author always did their best to seem credible, both of which I think Fernando will gain from.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

The way they introduced the game itself was very helpful as someone who isn't familiar with it, and I'm going to try and do so with my own topic a bit better.

Now that I've got some rough drafts of my content up, how do I feel about this week?

What were some of the successes (or, things that went right) during this week’s process work? 

I feel like I'm getting better at working in the video genre since I haven't in quite a long time, and with the intro and closing sections of my project done, I have a good idea of where to go next.

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? 

Finding a way to extract video content from different outlets was a challenge, since there was footage I wanted to use for my video but wasn't really able to get it for my own use without a bit of messing around.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

I think that next week will go well as I go into the real content of my project since that's where most of the controversy is going to end up being.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

I'm feeling pretty confident that it's going to go well, and that I'll be fairly successful in getting my points across.

When watching the genre examples on D2L, it seemed like most of them ended with a decent summary of the events and some sort of call to action, so I decided to make it so that I recapped the events that took place and asked the viewer to think about it in their own mind.

How did the production of this raw material go? What kinds of any hiccups, challenges, successes, creative epiphanies, etc. occurred during the process?

It was tough for me to decide on what to say, since the topic is going to have a lot of different responses from those with differing opinions on the death of al-Awlaki and how it should have been handled.

Since it is a video, I thought it would be important to have something open that wasn't just myself talking over a static picture, and I think that by introducing the topic through al-Awlaki himself it would make it more interesting for the viewer.

How did the production of this raw material go? What kinds of any hiccups, challenges, successes, creative epiphanies, etc. occurred during the process?

Finding an opening video was somewhat difficult, since YouTube has removed most of the videos from al-Awlaki due to requests for their takedown from the US government. Other than that though, it went pretty well!

Peer Review for David Klebosky

Looking at other works within the project help me better understand what I need to improve on, so I reviewed the pre-production phase project work of David Klebosky, entitled "Research Report."

I chose to review their research report, a guide to the sources that they will use to seem like a credible author and back up the claims that they will be making during their project. My comments can be found here.

I think that by saying that he is doing well with his sources he can be more confident in the evidence that he is going to use within his project since he has a good understand of the sources he's going to be using in terms of research.

When looking through the genre examples on D2L, most of them had a wide variety of source types, as David does in his research report, with examples ranging from YouTube clips to books to stand up comedy shows which shows that he is doing well in terms of diverse sources.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

I really like the amount of diversity in the types of sources David was using, since most of my sources were printed sources unlike his which ranged greatly.

Now that we're all getting started on our new projects, it's a good idea to give some feedback. This week I reviewed the pre-production phase project work of Emily Bond, entitled "Content Outline."

I chose to review their content outline, which is a general guideline by which their project will be structured, and the evidence and points that they're going to make. My comments can be found here.

I think that by providing exact sources for their evidence, it'll be easier for them to both reference the evidence for themselves and to have to the reader / listener possibly look into the source. Also, by having a solid opening they can grab the viewer's attention more effectively than a statistic.

When looking at all of the genre examples, the opening was often something flashy or interesting rather than just starting directly with a voice over.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

I like the way that Emily plans to include a lot of statistics and evidence within her project, and think that this could be nice to have for myself, but know that it's tough to have some of those things for my specific argument.

Reflection on Pre-Production

Project 3 is off to a good start, so I'd like to share some of my thoughts on it.

What were some of the successes (or, things that went right) during this week’s process work? 

I think that publishing my content outline and research report are definitely going to help me get started on next week's work with a substantial headstart on the work I'm going to need to do.

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? 

Working on the research report definitely took a good deal of time, but I feel that after working on it, I'm more well versed in the topic despite having to spend so much time getting to know all of my sources.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

I'm hoping that next week is going to go pretty well since I've got most of my research figured out already and the general outline of my project already done.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

I'm feeling pretty good about it so far since I've done a decent amount of the work required to get started, and now most of the work needing to get done is going to be production where I'm able to use all of the research gathered so far.

So, how am I going to organize my project over the next coming weeks?

Opening
For my opening, I'm probably going to try and open with a clip of one of Awlaki's moderate teachings, to show the stark contrast between the man that was killed and the man that used to be. I'll introduce the topic and the key events leading up to the day of September 30, 2011.

Section 1 - Introduce the Pre-9/11 background of Awlaki

  • Awlaki Serving as an Imam - As a religious leader in his mosque, Awlaki became a respected figure within his community. Shows how he 
  • Awlaki's Time in San Diego - Remembered as a beloved imam, members of his mosque are unsure of what changed in the future. Shows that he was once a loving man who drastically changed his later life.
Section 1 - Awlaki's Radical Preaching

  • Terror Watch - After being connected to the Fort Hood shootings, Awlaki was put on a terror watch list and a warrant was put out for his arrest. This shows how he was transforming from a peaceful imam to a powerful terror advocate.
  • Financing Terror - Awlaki began calling for jihad and the financing of various terror groups after returning to Yemen in 2004. Once again, this shows how he was becoming a radical extremist from his peaceful roots.

Section 3 - The Legal Argument

  • The Manhunt - After searching for years for Awlaki, the US government finally found and killed Awlaki in a drone strike. This shows that the US was willing to take extreme measures against as US citizen.
  • The Memo - This discusses the secret memo used as legal justification for the killing of Awlaki despite his citizenship. It shows that the US believes it had a sound legal argument for the strike despite his citizenship.

Closing
Over the years, it became evident that despite his peaceful beginnings, Awlaki quickly became radicalized after the events of 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq. But were the drastic actions taken by the US worth the precedent being set of killing American citizens?

Rhetorical Analysis of Project 3

So now that we're getting started on Project 3, I should probably know what I'm going to be talking about, or at least how I'll be doing that.

How will you relate to your subject for Project 3? 

As an avid fan of civilian drone usage, I have a good amount of background knowledge on the subject, and my ECE major makes me somewhat familiar with the systems used on drones. Also, it is a fairly recent topic that I have some memory of, along with being interesting and controversial to nearly every American citizen since it was another American that was targeted.

What are the preconceptions, previously held opinions and/or potential areas for personal bias that you should be aware of for Project 3? 

I am strongly against the usage of drones to kill Awlaki, but after reading some of the reports on the subject it may have been the best option available to us. Also, I am astounded by the lack of political controversy on the topic since killing an American citizen should have been the cause for debate far greater than a secret memo. However, I will do my best to provide an unbiased representation of the controversy in my argument, especially since I am going to be attempting to explain the cause of the killing.

How are you thinking about your audience for this project? Who are you going to make this for? 

I am going to try and focus my project on those who have only a cursory understanding of the topic, rather than those who have an in depth understanding, since they already know the reasoning behind his death.

What beliefs and assumptions might this audience already hold? What position are they likely to take on this issue? How will you respond to that position?

They're not likely to hold a strong opinion on Awlaki specifically, but they may have an opinion on the killing of American citizens and the usage of drones.

How might they react to your argument?

I don't think they'll react too strongly since I'm only explaining the cause, but they may still be unhappy with the act itself rather than my explanation.

How are you going to relate to or connect with your audience? Are there any specific words, ideas or ways of arguing that will help you relate to them in this way?

It's going to be tough to relate to them due to the controversy happening across the country, but I may be able to connect with some of the political thoughts.

Think of one specific person or a set of people you know personally or professionally who fall within the definition of ‘target audience’ you’re using for Project 3. What could you tell them or say to them in order to convince them of your perspective? What would need to happen for them to agree with you?

I think that for a general audience member to agree with me they'd just have to listen to the facts since they shouldn't have too strong an opinion on the topic so far.

What do you want to accomplish with Project 3? What affect do you want it to have on your intended audience?

After watching the video for my project, I hope that the viewer will consider the fact that not everything the government is doing is above reproach, and that there should be something they're willing to get involved over and ask questions about.

Once you’ve done all your research and figured out what you think about the controversy you’ve chosen, what still needs to be accomplished?

I'm still going to have to acquire video clips to use in my production, along with recording sessions for the voice over and the editing of the footage to create my finished product.

What course genre will you be writing in for Project 3?

I'll be working the genre of video essay to help give the most exposure to the viewer.

What kinds of audience expectations come along with this genre, generally?

Within the video essay genre, viewers will be expecting various video clips that relate to the topic at hand, along with a voiceover which helps explain what the author wants you to know. Also, there will clips of other sources besides myself.

What is your history working in the genre you have selected for Project 3?

I have some limited experience from video production in high school, but in terms of audio editing I have experience from high school and the podcast from project 2.

Describe your comfort level and general feelings about the genre. How will they affect your work on Project 3?

I'm fairly comfortable with the aspects of video editing, but know that I'll have to remind myself of some of the ways of editing the footage. 

What are the two most effective conventions in this genre, in your opinion? Why? Be specific.

The most effective conventions for video essays are outside clips of other views on your topic, and the voice over where you are explaining the points you want to make.

Are there any historical events that might impact how your audience perceives your argument or the kind of background information or evidence you need to include? 

The events of 9/11, Awlaki's life until his death in 2011, the congressional passage of the AUMF, and the legal memo produced which allowed the government to kill Awlaki.

Editorial Report

While making my final draft, it became evident that I had to make a few changes. But what all did I end up changing?


How did the content change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the content is being communicated more effectively in the re-edited version?

By reworking the intro to be more direct in its introduction, I believe that the listener can have an easier time finding out what the podcast is going to about. It also now includes a brief overview of the types of strategies which will be discussed.

How did the form change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the form is presenting the content more effectively in the re-edited version?

By adding music I believe that the intro is more interesting, which makes the listener more likely to continue. Also, the podcast is more direct than before, which I believe will improve "listenability" of the podcast.

Editorial Report

During the process of making my final draft, I had to make a few edits, but how did they improve my podcast?


How did the content change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the content is being communicated more effectively in the re-edited version?

In my closing, I took the time this time to recap the main points of my podcast while still trying to keep it succinct. Before, it was difficult to understand what these points were, and by adding a reminder about why it is important helps to remind the reader of the point of ECE writing.

How did the form change (even slightly - details matter!) when you re-edited it? Why do you think the form is presenting the content more effectively in the re-edited version?

I tried to cut down on the length of the closing while still keeping it interesting. Also, adding a bit of outro music to help signify the end will let the listener know that there won't be any more content to listen to.

Reflection on Post-Production

So now that it'll all over with, how did it go?

What were some of the successes (or, things that went right) during this week’s process work? 

I think that while editing, I found my stride working in the podcast genre, and feel like the script and tone vastly improved during this week's edits as shown in the editorial reports and

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? 

Getting the audio to edit in correctly was somewhat difficult, but after inserting a few clips I began to get a feel for what all needed to be done each time to get it working properly.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

I'm looking forward to the next project, especially since I already have a couple of ideas on what I might talk about. Also, I'm more confident in editing audio at least, which should help in putting a video together.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

I'm feeling good about it! Now that it's turned in I'm honestly pretty happy with how it turned out. I think it's a pretty helpful introduction to writing in my field and that it's interesting, at least to me.

Peer Review for Marvin Chaires

Moving on to a different type of genre, I'm going to go ahead and review a QRG to see how my information can be presented in different ways.

I'll be reviewing the piece "Chemical Writing in Some of Its Shapes and Sizes" by Marvin Chaires and giving my feedback for his rough cut so far.

An explanation of the peer review activity you selected for the project you reviewed

While writing a QRG there are a number of elements which will help the reader get the most from the piece, so I'll be making a re-design recommendation where I talk about the way that Marvin presents his information.

An explanation of how you think you helped the author with your feedback

I know that one of the things that's very important in a QRG is how the reader interacts with the text, so I hope that by providing a few suggestions for Marvin I helped him increase the readability and interactivity of his text so that the reader gets all the information they need.

An explanation of how you incorporated something from the suggested Student’s Guide readings (or any other course materials, if you’d prefer) into your feedback

Looking at the QRGs done by previous students (including myself) I realized that a QRG is a difficult form to master, since it requires a good integration of images and hyperlinking to keep the reader interested. Also, these examples show that separating the sections clearly is very important to make sure the reader doesn't get confused while reading.

One thing about their work that you admired or think you could learn from

I liked the way that they included a summary of what was important in each section so that the reader has a brief recap of the conventions of that genre before moving on to the next one being presented.

Peer Review For Kathryn Russell

So it's that time again where we look towards another student's work to see what can be improved for both their work, and possibly our own.

This week I'll be reviewing "Help" by Kathryn Russell, which in its current form is a podcast script rough draft. My comments will be on the podcast's use of form, since at the moment there are no genre conventions conveyed in the script.

When creating a podcast, following the genre conventions is extremely important in ensuring the listener stays engaged and gets the information they need.

By using the different genre conventions of a podcast, the reader will be much more likely to stay listening and still get the information that they need, learning about the writing in her field.

By looking at the genre examples of podcasts posted in D2L of student and professional works, I was able to gather a few tips on what should be included in the podcast to make it interesting to listen to.

I like how they planned to integrate so many different sources of information into their podcast, since I know that my current source list is rather lacking comparatively.

Open Post to Peer Reviewers

So, what's the deal with ECE writing?

I know that this is a very rough cut and that I'll probably be going through another time to re-record the segments with a more coherent and focused recording session. Hopefully I can achieve this over spring break and update the draft so that I get more constructive feedback than I would with this draft.

Major issues or weaknesses in the “Rough Cut” that you’re already aware of (as well as anything you’d like to know from your editors about those weaknesses)


I would like to talk more about the presentations and lectures section of my draft, but I didn't quite have enough time to finish covering it this week. I would like to expand more on the emotion and logical appeals within the genre and help explain to students how these might be effective or ineffective for listeners.

Major virtues or strengths in the “Rough Cut” that you’re already aware of (as well as anything you’d like to know from your editors about those strengths)

I believe that the interviewees that I had for this project were very helpful in what they brought to the table for me to share with you, and that their insight helped me along the way. Also, I feel that the detail which I shared about the strategies used in research papers is a helpful way to cover the majority of tools writers use in that genre.

Reflection on Production

So now that I'm working more on my rough draft, I think it's a good time to do a bit of reflection on the work so far.

What were some of the successes (or, things that went right) during this week’s process work? 

I think it was a good start that I didn't wait until Sunday to get started on my rough draft, since it did take some time to write parts of the script for my draft. However, I feel more confident working with the podcast software I've been using and that should help with any future edits.

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? 

It was difficult trying to figure out how exactly to put an image into the listener's brain using only my voice since it's pretty hard to translate an image into solely words. Also, getting familiar with Audacity was a bit difficult at first, but that comes with doing something new.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

I think that next week will be really helpful since I'm still not quite sure if I'm on the right track with my drafts and I'd like a second opinion. But so far I'm feeling good about project two so I think next week should go well.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

So far I'm feeling pretty good about the project so far, but I'm really looking forward to peer review to see if the techniques I've used in my drafts are effective in conveying my thoughts to the listener since it's difficult to tell for myself.

So now that I've done the introduction, I think that tackling the closing segment of my podcast will give me a good place to start for my rough draft.

As the world becomes more reliant on technology, ensuring that ECE majors are well prepared for all situations which they enter. Whether it be designing a new computer or the next Microsoft word, ECE majors are everywhere.

At the end of the podcast it's usually important to thank the listeners and ensure that the segment wraps up in a way that doesn't leave any extra questions for the listener. Also, I wanted to thank everyone who helped me in the podcast such as my interviewees for their time.

How did the production of this raw material go? 

It was a bit difficult to make a script of the closing since I wasn't quite sure what information I wanted to include, but after that the production went smoothly, and I'm confident in my production for the rest of this project.

Within a podcast, it's important to keep a listener's attention despite the lack of visual information for them to see. So, I tried to make the segment interesting enough and fun to listen to rather than being entirely filled with information.

How did the production of this raw material go? 

I think this part of the production was very successful since it was a quick section to finish, and I'm hoping that the intro is interesting enough to entice the listener to keep going. It took a little bit to understand the audio software I was using, but I now feel confident using it for later production stages.

Reflection On My Production So Far


After my work so far on Project Two, what do I think?

What were some of the successes (or, things that went right) during this week’s process work? Explain, with evidence.

Over the past week I completed my second interview of the project with Gavin Young, a graduate student here at the U of A. Through both of my interviews I found out a lot about the field in general and why it excites others, and about the writing that I'll be doing in the future.

What were some of the challenges (or, things that went wrong) during this week’s process work? Explain, with evidence.

Having enough time to prepare for my interviews was a difficult one since for both of my interviews I was only able to get into the room about 5 minutes early which didn't leave a lot of time to set up and prepare once I got there.

How do you think next week will go, based on your experiences this week?

I think we're off to a solid start for Project Two, and I'm interested to see where I'll be taking it with the production of my podcast this week. I think it should be exciting to get a more definite idea of where I'll be heading with the specifics of integrating my interviews and examples, but I still have a few questions.

How are you feeling about the project overall at this point?

While I really enjoyed being able to interview Dr. Tharp and Gavin, I'm still kind of confused on what we're actually supposed to be presenting in our projects. I can elaborate somewhat on the specifics of each genre, but I'm not quite sure how much detail we're expected to give or how to accurately depict the writing.

So, how am I going to organize my second project this week?


Opening:
Talk about what's new in ECE recently, introduce the field and what happens in it.
  • Maybe talk about VR Tech?
  • Elon Musk and Tesla / SpaceX
So, when writing about these new things, what genres do ECE professionals use? What types of rhetorical strategies do ECE professionals apply when writing, and what is the process by which they create their work? Today we’ll talk about the genres of social media, lectures and presentations, and the academic research paper.


Body Sections:
  • Despite being technologically inclined, ECE professionals are not always active on social media.
- Dr. Tharp's lack of active social media, having only a very barebones LinkedIn page and his response to professionals on social media from my interview with him. Important since it shows that despite having a computer background, many are still uninterested in social media.
- When talking to Gavin, he said that while he is slightly more active on social media (Facebook (Must be logged in), LinkedIn) he explains that it has little professional value to him personally. However, I think that these are some anomalies rather than the real trend.



  • Presentations and lectures are common practice for academic professionals within the ECE field given to prospective students or other practicing professionals.
- Evidenced by Dr. Tharp's homepage, both presentations and lectures are important to ECE professionals. This is important since it shows that there are other genres than very formal writing.
- Though Gavin does not have to present a thesis for his master's, he is required to make regular presentations as a research assistant and teaching assistant. This is important since it shows that while ECE majors may not enjoy presenting, we are often required to do so.



  • Academic research reports are by far the most well known type of genre within the academic ECE field.
- With hundreds of academic journals available, finding research on new topics within ECE is very easy to do. Covering a wide variety of topics, it is important to view these publications as a central piece of ECE writing.
- A vast majority of academic professionals write, and both Gavin and Dr. Tharp were able to provide their own writing examples such as Gavin's 14-3-3 paper and Tharp's Optimal Pole Placement paper, which show the conventions for academic writing.



Closing:
As the world becomes more reliant on technology, ensuring that ECE majors are well prepared for all situations which they enter. Whether it be designing a new computer or the next Microsoft word, ECE majors are everywhere.
